Can We Diminish the Deleterious Impacts of Social Media “Facebook” to the Underage?
All of the adolescences in Indonesia are familiar with so-called Facebook, and even every minute, every second, and every hour of the day the adolescences entire the world access this social media. You would do the same with them, wouldn’t you? Not only adult people are able to access Facebook, but also underage can now access this social media without fronting any snags. Nevertheless, the underage is the most worrying-Facebook-users. They access that social media anywhere and anytime by using their gadgets and even they prefer spending most of their time to update status, to give comments, and to “selfie” (as today’s trend) in the social media instead of doing their responsibility as a student. They unconsciously spend a lot of money every day, and waste their time by doing disadvantageous-activities. The government, exclusively the teachers, must deal with this phenomenon as a serious-problem that has to at least be shrink. If we let this phenomenon occur uninterruptedly, it will give wicked-impacts to the underage. Here the writer suggests some stepladders (based on the writer’s experience) to diminish the further deleterious-impacts to the underage, i.e. the teachers should give more assignments to their students, and making a mutual-aid with their parents to watch over their children activities in using internet.
One of the stepladder that the writer offers is getting the teachers to give more assignments to their students. The expectation of it is to minimize the access to the Facebook because if they have more assignments, they will totally focus in that assignments (as the writer experienced) and try to overlook Facebook in a moment and do the assignments. In this step, the teacher must not give sort of assignments by which the students have to search for the material resources on the internet, as they are able to use this occasion to refer the Facebook website instead of searching for the materials. Nonetheless, the teachers can use another strategy by asking the students to search for the references through the books that available in their school library or public library so that they can acquire two benefits at once (the assignments are finished, and so the reading skill is enhanced). That is why this step is acceptable to be applied to decline the access to Facebook.
Second step that can be done is by making a mutual-aid with the adolescences’ parents to watch over their children’s activities in using internet. It might appear so problematic to be done, as their parents cannot escort their children all day. However, it can be tactically done by some manners. For instance, the parents ask the teacher where their children school to inform all of their children’s assignments-based-internet. Does it do need internet to accomplish the assignments or not? If does, the parents can activate “parental control” feature which is available in approximately all computer specifically which sticks on operating system to block irrelevant networks. So that the parents can monitories their children activities in referring irrelevant websites. Elsewhere, not all parents of the underage should give their children gadgets that do not fit on their age, i.e.: tablet, phablet, smart phone, and modem. This way is effective decreasing the access to the Facebook website. We could threat by limiting our children’s pocket money if they access Facebook still. Therefore, we, as parents, can watch over our children and restrict their activities doing disadvantageous-activities using internet.
These two steps of decreasing the negative impacts of Facebook are able to be used to both teacher and parents. Even though these steps sound quite unbearable, and the teacher might have some difficulties in applying these steps (first step, that is, give more assignments to the students, and second step, that is, watch the children’s activities using internet) but at least they have made a small effort for their children’s future. In summary, both teachers and parents here are playing an important rule for the advance of the underage.
